Sitting Bull College, also known as SBC, is a tribal college located in Fort Yates, in the State of North Dakota. The school was founded in 1973 by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe of the Standing Rock reservation located in south-central North Dakota. The Standing Rock Indian Reservation is made up of 2.8 million acres of land base in North Dakota and South Dakota. The SBC campuses are found in ND, Fort Yates, and McLaughlin, all of which are in South Dakota. The school is just one of 34 tribally controlled colleges all over the nation. Sitting Bull College is known as the main and primary educational institution on the Standing Rock Reservation.
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council chartered Standing Rock Community College, making it one of the first tribally controlled higher education institutions on the country. In 1996, the College name was changed from Standing Rock College to Sitting Bull College in honor of the well known Native American. SBC offers vocational and academic training, and offers several courses and programs. Among the courses offered in the school includes 7 Bachelor of Science degrees, 5 Associate of Applied Science degrees, 10 Associate of Science degrees, 4 Associate of Arts, degrees and 7 certificate programs. Sitting Bull College also offers two-year programs in Criminal Justice, Business, Environmental Science, Building trades, Energy Technology, Human Services, Education, Native American Studies, office/information technology, and Nursing.
Aside from college degrees, SBC also offers 4 year programs in Special and Early Childhood education, Elementary, and Business and Environmental Science. As of 2012, the college has been running an experimental program that provides Lakota language immersion classes for the children under the school.
